Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week: Building Careers on Sempra Homes Sites

Story posted: 10/02/2025

As we mark National Apprenticeship Week 2025, Sempra Homes is proud to showcase the inspiring journeys of apprentices working on our sites. Through partnerships with skilled contractors, and sub-contractors, like, Hill Partnerships, Indecon Building Ltd and GSQ Brickwork Ltd, we are supporting the development of the next generation of construction professionals. Apprenticeships provide a vital pathway for young people to gain hands-on experience, industry qualifications, and a solid foundation for long-term careers.

Hands-on Learning with Real Career Progression

Jack– Carpentry Apprentice with Indecon Building Ltd

Jack, a resident of Basildon, joined Indecon, a Wickford based contractor, in 2018 straight from school and has been honing his skills on Sempra Homes developments ever since. Having successfully completed Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeships, Jack is now looking ahead to supervisory roles.

I knew that an apprenticeship would be more beneficial than just getting a job because I’d be learning while working on-site,” says Jack. “The combination of college learning and real-world experience has been invaluable, and I can see a clear path for progression.”

Matt– Level 2 Carpentry apprentice with Indecon

Matt, also a Basildon resident, started working on a Sempra Homes site in 2019 initially as a site labourer and with his commitment to progress he has now completed a Level 1 in Carpentry and Joinery and is working towards his Level 2.

Being able to put theory into practice on-site has been a game-changer,” Matt explains. “It’s great to be part of projects that provide homes for the local community while building my own career in construction.”

Bricklaying Excellence: Apprenticeship Success Stories

Frankie – Bricklaying Apprentice with GSQ Brickwork Ltd

Frankie’s journey into construction was inspired by his family’s background in the trades. After completing a Level 1 bricklaying course, he secured an apprenticeship with GSQ Brickwork Ltd and began working on Sempra Homes projects.

I knew I’d learn more on-site than in a classroom,” says Frankie. “The mix of structured training and real-world application has given me the confidence and skills I need to progress in the industry.”

Frankie is also using social media to showcase his work, sharing insights on TikTok to engage younger audiences and highlight the benefits of a career in construction.

Tom- Bricklaying Apprentice with SPS Brickword

Tom has always been interested in construction, having grown up with his father working in the trade. He decided to pursue a Level 2 Bricklaying Apprenticeship at Chelmsford College. Now working on Sempra Homes’ Bowers Close development in Pitsea with subcontractor SPS Brickwork, he hasn’t looked back.

“I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship route to any of my friends. It’s a great way to start your career while earning as you learn. You gain real-world experience, develop essential skills, and set yourself up for a successful future in the industry.”

Oli– Bricklaying Apprentice with GSQ Brickwork Ltd

For Oli, bricklaying is more than just a trade—it’s a family legacy. As the son of GSQ Brickwork Ltd’s founder.  Oli is determined to earn his place in the industry and eventually take on leadership responsibilities within the business.

I want to gain as much experience as possible, from site management to contract planning,” says Oli. “This apprenticeship has given me the skills and confidence to build a future in construction.”

Supporting Local Talent and the Future of Construction

Sempra Homes is committed to fostering local talent and ensuring that apprentices working on our sites have the resources and mentorship needed to thrive. By collaborating with companies like Hill, Indecon and GSQ Brickwork Ltd, we are providing opportunities for young professionals to develop their skills while contributing to high-quality housing projects in the Basildon Borough.

Sempra is dedicated to delivering on Basildon Borough Council’s policies, which emphasise maximising the use of local labour and apprenticeship schemes.  We are delighted that both Matt and Jack are Basildon residents, positively contributing to the local economy and community through their hard work and commitment.

Apprenticeships are essential for the future of the construction industry and it is important to invest in training and learning pathways to attract young people into the industry to address the construction skills shortage. We are proud to support apprentices like Jack, Matt, Frankie, and Oli, who are not only gaining valuable skills but also helping to build homes for local communities. National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect time to recognise the achievements of apprentices, says Melanie Keys, Service Manager and Company Secretary at Sempra Homes. “Their dedication and hard work are a testament to the value of apprenticeships in developing skilled professionals and supporting local economic growth.”

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2025, we encourage more young people to explore the opportunities available in the construction sector. As Jack, Matt, Oli and Frankie continue to progress in their careers, their journeys highlight the benefits of apprenticeships—not just for individuals but for the wider community. With structured learning, on-the-job training, and strong employer support, apprenticeships remain a vital route into fulfilling and sustainable careers.
