Sempra Homes, the subsidiary company of Basildon Council, has been awarded £2.4 million of funding to support the delivery of affordable housing at its forthcoming developments, Tyefields and Broadmayne, in Basildon.

The funding, secured from the recently extended £500m Affordable Housing Programme, will enable Sempra Homes to convert 50% of the homes at the two developments to affordable tenure. This includes 17 social rented council homes and 13 shared ownership homes, with priority given to Basildon residents and veterans.

Melanie Keys, Service Manager at Sempra Homes says, “We welcome this additional Government funding, which will enable us to deliver much-needed affordable homes to Basildon residents. Significant progress has already been made at Tyefields and Broadmayne with our contractor partner, The Hill Group. We are on track to deliver these homes by March 2026, with two of the social rented homes at Broadmayne ready as early as Spring 2025.

“This funding is in addition to the £11.4 million already allocated to our Chapelgate development for essential infrastructure works and 70 social rented homes, as well as £300,000 infrastructure funding to unlock Broadmayne.”

Sempra Homes is working with The Hill Group as the contractor partner for these developments as part of a wider strategic partnership involving Basildon Council, South Essex Council, One Public Estate and Homes England, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. These developments will provide significant benefits for local residents and businesses, including employment, training, apprenticeship placements and the use of local suppliers.

In total the three developments -  Chapelgate, Broadmayne and Tyfields -  have received £14.1 million in government funding to support essential infrastructure and convert 100 homes to social rented and shared ownership tenure, delivering 166 new homes in total.

Cllr Adele Brown, Deputy Leader of Basildon Council and Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure said: “There is an undeniable and urgent need to increase the supply of social and affordable homes in our borough, and at Basildon Council, we are tackling this challenge head-on. Through Sempra Homes, we are driving forward our housebuilding programme, with plans already on track to deliver 244 new homes in the next 15 months.”

“Today’s funding announcement is fantastic news for our community. It will allow us to bring even more brand-new council homes and affordable housing to homes to Basildon people including veterans who need them most. However, we recognise there is still much work to be done. That’s why we remain ambitious in our vision to deliver more homes for local people, ensuring that everyone in Basildon has a safe, secure place to call home.”

The Tyefields development in Basildon will deliver 26 new homes, comprising two and three-bedroom houses. Chapelgate will provide 35 houses and 70 flats located off Laindon Link. Broadmayne will offer a mixture of 15 flats and 20 family houses.
