"I’d Recommend an Apprenticeship to Any of My Friends"

As National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the value of vocational learning, 17-year-old Tom is sharing his journey as a bricklaying apprentice, encouraging others to consider the benefits of hands-on training in the construction industry.

Tom has always been interested in construction, having grown up with his father working in the trade. After completing his GCSEs, he decided to pursue a Level 2 Bricklaying Apprenticeship at Chelmsford College. Now working on Sempra Homes’ Bowers Close development in Pitsea with subcontractor SPS Brickwork, he hasn’t looked back.

Reflecting on his experience, Tom says: “My apprenticeship has been really rewarding so far. There is so much skill that goes into bricklaying, and I’m really enjoying learning the craft. I also love working on-site, meeting new people, and being part of a team. The support from my colleagues has been fantastic, and I take great pride in seeing the new homes take shape from start to finish.”

Tom is keen to highlight the benefits of apprenticeships to others considering their future career paths.

“I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship route to any of my friends. It’s a great way to start your career while earning as you learn. You gain real-world experience, develop essential skills, and set yourself up for a successful future in the industry.”

Apprenticeships like Tom’s provide a vital pathway into skilled trades, helping to address industry skills shortages while offering young people a valuable and fulfilling career path. As National Apprenticeship Week shines a spotlight on opportunities across various sectors, Tom’s story is a testament to the success and impact of vocational training.
